TB
is the leading cause of death from bacterial infection. It is transmitted from
person to person. It is a particular threat for
nosocomial transmission, with a
potentially lethal impact on health care workers.
- More than 2 billion people (~1/3 of world population) is affected by TB
- 370,000 people die of TB in India every year (~ 1000 deaths per day, 2deaths every 3mins)
- The estimated incidence of TB in India is 1.8 million new cases annually.
- India accounts for approximately one fifth of the global TB incidence.
- In India – deaths from TB are 27-41% higher among young women and children 5-24 years compared to males the same age.
- Of world's estimated 450,000 MDR-TB patients 15700 MDR-TB suspects are from India in the past years
- MDR-TB is estimated to be found in more than 3.4% of the new cases and in 12% of the re-treatment cases of TB
- There have been no new TB drugs in past 50 years
